Something else on your mind? See all questions or ask us directly.
Is it cheaper to go direct to the insurer than through an adviser?
Usually not. For the same policy, the premium is generally the same whether you apply through Arcadia or straight to the insurer: the insurer pays our commission, and it isn't added to your price. Going direct means you do the comparing, the application and any claim on your own. Going through us means someone who does this every day compares seven insurers, gets the wording right, and is there to help with claims and reviews down the track. We don't charge you for our advice either way.
I already have insurance through work. Isn't that enough?
It is a good start, but usually not enough on its own. Workplace cover is typically a multiple of your salary, ends the day you leave the job, and rarely includes income or mortgage protection. Many people also pay for personal cover out of their own pocket on top of their work cover, without the two being set up to work together, and there can be serious gaps nobody has pointed out. We look at what your work cover actually provides, then set up any personal cover to work alongside it, so you are not paying twice and the gaps are covered.
Won't ACC cover me if I can't work?
Only if the cause is an accident. ACC generally pays nothing for illness, and illness is a common reason for long absences from work in New Zealand: cancer, heart problems, mental health, back conditions that aren't from a single injury. Even for accidents, ACC pays a percentage of your earnings with a cap. Income protection, trauma and life cover exist to fill the gap ACC leaves.
I'm young and healthy. Why would I need insurance now?
Because cover is usually cheapest and easiest to get while you're young and healthy. Insurers price on age and health at the time you apply, and any condition you develop later is usually excluded from cover you buy after it appears. Locking in cover while you are healthy, especially on level premiums, means the cover is there when a mortgage, a partner or kids arrive. You can start small and add to it.
Insurance is too expensive. Can I even afford it?
The price depends on what you choose, and most of the levers are yours: how much cover, which covers, waiting periods and excesses. Our process is built to size cover to what you actually need and nothing more, then compare seven insurers on price. We will also tell you which covers matter most for your situation so you can prioritise if the full picture is not affordable yet.
I have a health condition. Won't I just get declined?
Often you will not. Insurers assess conditions differently: one may exclude it, another may charge a bit more, another may cover it on standard terms. Before you apply anywhere, we check the likely outcome with several insurers so a decline is far less likely to end up on your record. Health insurance usually excludes pre-existing conditions, but life, trauma and income cover are frequently still available. We also partner with an insurer that can offer cover to many people with the common health conditions New Zealanders face. Every application is assessed individually, and the insurer makes the final decision.
How much time will this take? I don't have hours for forms.
Not long. It starts with a short quote form that takes seconds, then a focused phone or video call, usually no more than half an hour. Afterwards you get a written recommendation, and we handle the application, keeping it as easy as possible. Many people go from first call to cover in place within days.
Will you just recommend whatever pays you the most commission?
No, and you can check. All seven insurers pay us commission, and the rates differ. Our recommendation comes in writing with the reasons, we must by law put your interests first, and the commission ranges are in our public disclosure.
What if my situation changes or I can't afford it later?
You're not locked in. Cover can be reduced, paused in some cases, or cancelled at any time, and you only ever pay the premiums for the months you hold it. Reviews with your adviser are free, so when a mortgage is paid down or the kids leave home, we adjust the cover to match. Most policies also let you increase cover without new medical questions when life gets bigger.
